Platypus Bush Camp

Located about an hour’s drive west of Mackay, Eungella National Park is one of the most renowned places in Australia to see the elusive platypus in the wild.

The viewing platforms at Broken River offer a unique opportunity to observe these shy creatures in their natural environment, alongside turtles and a variety of other native wildlife.

For the best chance of spotting a platypus, visit at dawn or dusk when they are most active.

A great viewing spot is the Broken River bridge, which provides an excellent vantage point to watch platypus glide through the water below.

These creatures are naturally cautious, so it’s important to remain still and quiet. Look for trails of air bubbles in the water—this can signal a platypus feeding along the riverbed before surfacing to breathe and chew its food.

Between walks, enjoy a meal at the Platypus Lodge Café, where you can also find informative displays about the park and its unique ecosystem.

With over 22 kilometres of scenic walking trails, as well as a selection of local accommodations, cafés, and restaurants, Eungella is the perfect place to explore, relax, and, if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of a platypus in the wild.
